Are you having chest pains and a burning feeling that radiates from your chest? Does this pain arises from your chest to your throat? Well, you are having heartburn which is a common sympton of GERD or acid reflux.

Aside from pharmacological and surgical interventions for acid reflux, positional therapy can be one of the effective ways to therapeutically intervene with this problem. This can be aided with the use of a foam wedge pillow.

The typical symptoms one who is suffering from acid reflux will experience includes heartburn, regurgitation and difficulty in swallowing. Rarer symptoms include pain while swallowing, nausea, pain in the chest and even excessive salivation.

According to studies, positional therapy can work to the highest degree as an effective therapy for people with acid reflux disease. The act of elevating the head of the bed proves to be working. You can elevate the head of the bed using either plastic or wooden bed risers. These days, a therapeutic foam wedge pillow or an inflatable mattress is used for this purpose.

You will be able to raise the head of the person who is experiencing acid reflux by using a foam wedge pillow. It is very important that this act of elevating the head is done to the right height. This right height would be around 6 to 8 inches which is the minimal effective height for positional therapy to work.

Besides having the ability to reduce the symptoms of acid reflux, foam wedge pillows can also aid in bringing relief to the muscle cramps of pregnant women. She can use these foam pillows to elevate her legs up while on the bed to reduce and relive the pressure caused by her own weight and her baby’s weight. This will also aid in the blood circulation of her legs.

Actually, there are no direct cure or treatments for gastro-esophgeal reflux disease at the moment. However, with the right and effective treatment, plus some good lifestyle modifications you will be able to live a normal life.

UncoverTwo Alternative Sleep Apnea Remedies

There are many sleep apnea remedies. Here you’ll find one which is best for you. Besides the standard sleep apnea remedies there’s also alternative treatments. In this post we’ll present two main ideas. Give yourself a chance to get acquainted with the alternatives and with your doctor choose what is best for you.

1. Homeopathy presents itself as an additional method of treatment. Based on the basic law of this alternative medicine, taking tiny quantities from ingredients that in greater quantities produce exactly the same effects as the ailment can cure that illness.

The homeopathic cures, which are available in the form of very thinned solutions, endeavor to stimulate your body’s natural response to illness. One such homeopathic sleep apnea remedy is formed of snake venom in a much diluted solution and is used for extroverted persons. Its name is Lachesis and is primarily used to treat circulatory issues and blood conditions.

Another homeopathic remedy is the essence of Vervain or essence of lavender, which can help those enduring apnea to relax, and thus enjoy a deeper sleep.

If you happen to be tensed through the day, then this might inhibit you later on, throughout the night, to get the best sleep. For such cases a cup of sambucus or elderberry tea drank a couple of hours before bed could be helpful. It acts as an expectorant, clearing breathing passages.

2. Another alternative therapy is using herbal sleep apnea remedies, which approaches this ailmentfrom the holistic standpoint and in a natural, non-invasive way. Herbs, nature’s pharmacy, are from history for all types of health problems.

Using this method of treating the SAS is based on the thought that the cause of sleep apnea often is the interrupted nervous communication between the brain and the diaphragm.

The issue seriously isn’t the sagging soft palate or the rapid inhalation that sucks the soft palate into the airway. According to this tactic, the issue is a reduced capacity of the human brain to send a signal to your diaphragm to produce a breath with sufficient amplitude. If the breathing is sufficiently deep, then the apnea patient would not complete a rapid inhalation, suck the soft palate into the airway and snort, upsetting his sleep.

Based on that, it is strongly recommended Lobelia as a respiratory stimulant, which increases the profundity of respiration sufficiently to avoid the drop in blood oxygen because of the muscular inhibition.

Thyme is another herb suggested because of its resultregarding pleural activity. To these are added chamomile and cramp bark to loosen up the muscles from the neck. So, this mixture acts in two ways: to increase the amount of nervous signal for the diaphragm and to relax the neck muscles.

There are other sleep apnea remedies which you can use, some more standard, others more of a novelty. One of the best remedy depends on the severity of this disease and on other personal elements, each case being unique. It’s worth studying all the options.

Pillow Picking Tips For Problem Sleepers

by Kyleen T Shugar

Let me ask you, what do you think of when you hear the word “pillow”? Dreaming the night away supported by a downy soft pillow while burrowed under the covers. Or something else?

Did you know that sleeping on the wrong type of pillows can not only deprive you of sound sleep but can also have long term effects? Very soft or very small or using a pile of pillows or using none at all may result in neck and spinal problems. There’s more than meets the eye in choosing the right kind of pillows. Interested in knowing more?

But first, why is a pillow such a big deal? Well it matters so much because when your head and neck are not aligned you can end up with painful neck and back problems.

I mean if you are using a pillow all night that does not suit you, then your head’s alignment with your spine is out of whack. As a result your head might be pushed forward the whole night long subsequently leaving you open to neck or shoulder problems, even headaches down the line.

Of course if you think not using a pillow is better, I have to tell you it’s not. Why? The answer is simple. Again there’s the problem of non-alignment of your spine, neck and head - this time due to complete lack of support.

All this is only made worse if you work in front of a computer all day. As you naturally tend to slump forward only to repeat that process all night. It should be no surprise then why this can lead to back related issues.

If will but choose the right pillow you can say bye-bye to many of your neck, back and shoulder woes.

A snug down pillow is usually a good choice! It holds your head and neck in good balance and is very comfortable too.

Then there are special foam pillows that pretty much cradle you neck. Likely a preferred choice if you already have neck pain. Oh and with this design you’ll want to sleep on your back.

Plus how you sleep, whether on your side, back or tummy also plays a role in your decision. As does how much you’re asking the pillow to support in the first place.

While those with allergies are better off if they choose a hypoallergenic synthetic pillow and cover it with mite proof covers. You might even try the Breathe Well pillows which are asthma friendly.

There’s no shortage of pillow types you can find in a store. Choosing the right one for you comes down to your personal inclinations really. As you would imagine, there’re lots of impressive innovations even for pillows. For instance there are ones with ‘memory foam’, pump up pillows and even ones with audio ports for plugging in your iPod!

How to decide? Well for sure a test run can help. That’s right. You want to spend some time with the one you think might work to see how it really feels.

So now you know there is more to finding the best pillow than color, construction, or how soft it is. It’s more important to make your decision on how well it will support your neck and head. Plus how well it keeps things aligned.

If You’re Already Tried Every Insomnia Remedy Under The Sun, Why Not Try Feng Shui?

If you cannot remember the last time you had a good night’s sleep you’ve most likely already tried every insomnia remedy you can think of. But have you tried Feng Shui? Feng Shui is the traditional Chinese system of aesthetics that uses the laws of both Heaven and Earth to improve life by receiving positive energy. It might sound silly to you now, but if you have already tried every other insomnia remedy you can think of, why not strive Feng shui? It may be just the solution you’re looking for.

Remove the television, computer and exercise equipment from your bedroom. Even if you don’t use them at bedtime, just having these items in your bedroom destroys the good, Feng Shui energy that’s in the room. You need to think of your bedroom as place to sleep, not work or exercise. And having a television on will only make it that much harder for you to fall asleep.

Open a window and let the fresh air in. In order to have good Feng Shui in your bedroom you need to have fresh air, free from pollutants like cigarette smoke or food odors. It’s also not good Feng Shui to have plants in your bedroom unless the room is very large and the plants are located far from the bed.

Use calm, soothing colors in your bedroom to promote the best flow of energy for restorative sleep. The best colors for the bedroom are colors that range from pale white to chocolate brown and pastel blues and greens are also known to be peaceful, calming colors.

Images carry a powerful Feng Shui energy so when choosing pictures for your bedroom choose images that you would like to see happen in your life. Bright, sunny, happy pictures as opposed to depressing or brooding pictures. And for the best flow of Feng Shui energy keep all bedroom doors closed at night. This includes the door to the hallway, the bathroom and the closets.

As for the bed itself, Feng Shui is all about allowing the good energy to flow smoothly throughout the room and around your body. For that reason you should have a bed that is a reasonable height off the floor and beds with underbed storage are not good for Feng Shui. If you’ve got storage boxes underneath your bed those should be removed, too.

Position your bed so that it’s in a diagonal line with the door but as faraway as possible. You want to be able to see the door from the bed but not be directly aligned with it. There ought to also be a headboard on your bed, preferably made of wood, and your bed ought to be up against a strong supporting wall. Now, you need to ground the energy with a night stand on either side of the bed and there ought to be no sharp angles (from furniture or objects) pointing at you while you sleep.

If Feng Shui sounds like a snake charmer’s solution for an insomnia remedy, you should bear in mind that it’s an ancient Chinese art form that’s been in practice for hundreds of years and that many therapists swear by it. As I said, if you’ve already tried every other insomnia remedy, what have you got to lose?

Losing Weight Is One Of The Most Effective Sleep Apnea Cures

One of the most effective sleep apnea cures is not wearing a bulky mask or getting an uncomfortable pillow with a hole in the middle. You don’t have to take drugs, you don’t have to shop for herbs and you don’t need to drink any special tea before bedtime. Scientists have found that the most effective sleep apnea cure is to simply lose some weight.

The most frequent sufferers from sleep apnea are obese men and in scientific studies there was a 50% reduction in sleep apnea episodes in obese men who lost and average of 42 pounds throughout the course of the study.

Sleep apnea is a common disease in overweight people, particularly overweight men. It is a disorder that affects the breathing when an airway is blocked or collapsed and most people who suffer from sleep apnea have to use some kind of uncomfortable device to make sure their airways stay open throughout the night - either an uncomfortable pillow, a tennins ball sewn into the back of their pajamas that stops them from sleeping on their back, or a breathing apparatus called a CPAP, a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure mask.

As further proof that weight loss is one of the most effective sleep apnea cures, scientists point to the fact that there are virtually no cases of sleep apnea in developing nations where the individuals aren’t obese because they don’t have access to the calorie laden foods that we have here in the US.
However, we all understand that losing an extreme amount of weight is tough, even under the best of conditions. And when you’re tired and wiped out already due to lack of proper sleep, it’s even harder to try to shop for and prepare nutritious meals. It’s simply easier to reach for a quick fix of junk food. So it’s often necessary, particularly for somebody suffering from sleep apnea, to consult a physician for a healthy weight loss plan and possibly some kind of supplement to help with the process.

A complete lifestyle change may become necessary in order to maintain a healthy body weight. Doctors suggest having a look at how much time you put in at work and how long your commute is. And stress is also a known contributor to weight gain. Relieving some of the stresses of your daily life may be necessary to maintain a healthy body weight.

Although losing weight is one of the most effective sleep apnea cures, it also has quite a few other health benefits. Maintaining a healthy body weight can reduce risks of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, asthma and even reduces the chance of catching colds and flu. Maintaining a healthy body weight is not only one of the best sleep apnea cures, it’s also the single most significant thing you’ll do to improve your health. Now would you rather look better, feel better, and sleep better by losing a little weight or would you rather have to go to bed every night with a tennis ball sewn into the back of your pajamas and a mask over your face? Losing weight is the most effective, beneficial, and comfortable of all the sleep apnea cures.

How To Beat Insomnia Symptoms And Fall Asleep Fast

by Carla Manar

Insomnia symptoms affect people who have sleeping problems (if this affects you, download and read the free, in-depth report featured at the end of this text). Statistics show that the number of people who are unable to fall asleep fast is increasing by the day. With the recent economic recession that has hit homes, businesses and jobs worldwide, this is not surprising. What traces and signs can show that you are sleep deprived?

Difficulty sleeping at night is the direct result of most insomnia symptoms. This is generally caused by various factors. When a person is emotionally strained, when he or she is depressed, frustrated or afraid, it could lead to sleepless nights. Aging is another cause that could affect sleep. Illnesses like arthritis, heart related diseases, bladder inflammation and lung problems are other causes.

When you wake up frequently at night and can not go back to sleep afterwards, and if this happens to you at least a few times a week, on a regular basis, for an extended amount of time, then you are exhibiting insomnia symptoms.

Waking up too early in the morning, waking up feeling fatigued and more tired than you did when you went to bed, feeling easily irritated and angry, finding it hard to return to sleep once you are awake are signs that shows why you do not fall asleep fast enough.

Other kinds of phenomena like mood swings and tiredness during the day are also signs that further explain why you can’t fall asleep fast. For these cases, it makes sense to look at the underlying reason of your sleeplessness.

Sleep is a deeply ingrained activity, and is fundamental for the well being of any individual. There are, however, some disruptions in your usual rhythms of life that could stop sleep from occurring when it should. Jet lag - that is, abruptly moving between two time zones - is one such event. Spending the night in a new environment can also stop you from sleeping. When you sleep in a stuffy room that’s hot and uncomfortable, there is a tendency that you might not sleep well.

The loss of a loved one, a job, a home or something precious and cherished will also make sleep elude you, if you dwell on them. Try to confine your worries and sorrows to the waking hours, and leave the night to recharging your batteries.

There are also some activities that are best avoided before bedtime. When you smoke cigarettes, watch television late into the night or drink beverages that contain caffeine, you are living an unhealthy lifestyle and will soon start exhibiting insomnia symptoms. It’s best to avoid these activities late in the evening and at night.

Overcoming Insomnia Is Often Just A Matter Of Learning To Relax

by Ronda Sheree Gonzalez

Overcoming insomnia may be easier than you think. Of course, thinking may just be the problem. A lot of people who suffer from insomnia just cannot relax once they go to bed. It seems like once their head hits the pillow they start rehashing the day’s events. They replay their work day and worry about bills and personal problems. Then they end up tossing and turning and finally they’ve been lying in bed awake for so long that they are now uncomfortable which causes even more stress and now they’ll never get to sleep. Overcoming insomnia can be as easy as one-two-three for most individuals!
I realize it sounds trite to tell you that all you really need to do is relax when you go to bed and you will most likely fall right asleep. But it’s true. It’s just that most individuals don’t know the way to calm themselves. They do not know how to turn off the constantly repeating video tape that keeps running through their mind. Now don’t be alarmed by what I’m about to tell you, but self-hypnosis has proven to be very useful in overcoming insomnia.

By self-hypnosis I don’t mean that you have to lie there and watch the ceiling fan rotate or whisper “I am getting sleeeepppyyy.” I’m talking about a simple therapeutic relaxation technique that’s recommended by doctors and therapists for individuals who are trying to overcome any number of stressful situations - surgery, chemotherapy, panic attacks, high blood pressure, etc. All of these individuals need to learn the way to relax their nervous system and by learning to practice this easy technique at bedtime you will soon be on your way to overcoming insomnia.

Begin by darkening your bedroom. Consider getting some room darkening draperies if your work causes you to have to sleep during the day. It has been proven that we get a better night’s sleep if we sleep at night so making your room dark will help fool your body into thinking it’s night time. And turn off the television. Whether you realize it or not, the noise from the TV is really a distraction for your sub-conscious and it will disturb your sleep if left on all night.

Next, make sure that your room is a comfortable temperture now that it’s dark and quiet, and get yourself in a very comfortable sleeping position. It doesn’t matter if you like to sleep on your back or your side or all curled up in a ball. Just get comfortable.

After you’ve found that comfortable position, take a deep breath, as deep as you can get, in through your nose and hold it for the count of 5. Now very slowly release that breath through your mouth. Be certain to release it very slowly because you want to give your body time to absorb all the oxygen you just inhaled. Oxygen helps you relax. You’ll need to repeat this 3 times.

As you are doing all your deep breathing begin at your toes and concentrate on flexing them and then relaxing them and work your way all the way up your body, each muscle group at a time. Flex each muscle and then totally relax it and do not move on till you feel that individual muscle is completely relaxed.

By the time you get to your shoulders and neck you ought to be feeling pretty drowsy because all you’ve been concentrating on is breathing and flexing and relaxing your muscles rather than all of that other stressful stuff you usually think about. If not, start over again and breathe deeper and exhale even more slowly. Overcoming insomnia is generally just a matter of learning to relax your mind and your body at the same time.
