Do Anti-Snoring Products Work?
Posted by Serena Burditt on March 4th, 2010 filed in Sleep HealthMillions of people all over the worl suffer from snoring problems every time they go to sleep. But its not just the snorer who suffers. Anyone who sleeps in the same bed as a snorer will also be affected. And in many cases, those who share a house, flat or home are also affected by the sound of snoring. So no one sleeps properly! Snoring can not only lead to soreness, the loss of a good night’s sleep can lead to fatigue both in the snorer and those affected. It only takes a few nights of snoring for tiredness to become a problem - so snoring cures are widely sought and with great urgency. As a result, there are many anti snoring products available, but how many of these actually stop snoring?
If you suffer from snoring, or are close to someone who snores, the most important thing to know is that snoring can be an indicator of a serious underlying medical condition requiring professional help. People who snore loudly every night or wake up gasping could be suffering from sleep apnea which is a very serious breathing disorder. Sleep apnea may increase the risk of stroke and heart attack, and requires the attention of a doctor or medical professional. No anti snoring product on the market is designed to deal with sleep apnea, and any one snoring badly should first visit a doctor to rule this out before looking for an over the counter remedy.
There are many anti snoring products available. Some of them are Snore Zip, Snore Relief, Snorenz, Never Snore, and Breathe Right Nasal Congestion Relief. There are also many different types of anti snore product, such as oral sprays, nasal sprays, nose strips, mouthpieces, dental devices and chin straps, among others. The sprays and strips tend to be among the cheapest and easiest to apply and are therefore more common. Sprays are designed to be sprayed to the back of the throat, and strips are designed to go across the nose to opn the nasal passages.
Different sprays are said to work in different ways. The way most anti-snoring sprays work is to reduce inflammation in the sinus or the throat. Some sprays say they work by moistening the soft palate. Others claim to work by firming up loose tissues at the back of the throat. So it depends on the exact cause of the snoring whether or not it will work. But there’s no published scientific evidence that these sprays stop snoring, so its very much down to the individuals experience.
As for the strips, the USA Food and Drug Administration has allowed several products to claim that they “reduce snoring.” So the strips may be more universally applicable and worth a try.
But there are also many options that don’t cost anything. Medical experts say that simply losing weight or stopping smoking could help people who occasionally snore. And so can avoiding drinking alcohol just before bedtime. The evidence is that up to the age of 50, men are twice as likely to snore, but after the age of 50 women catch up. In all cases, it is the cause of snoring which dictates the remedy - find out what has worked for others and consider if the same might apply to you.
