Stop Snoring Remedies: Temporary or Permanent?
Posted by Jason McDrarren on July 27th, 2009 filed in Sleep HealthMost people wouldn’t have a problem with their snoring if they lived an slept alone. Most of us live with other people and our snoring affects their ability to get a good night rest. If you have a spouse or plan on getting one, then it is best to solve your snoring problem before it becomes a nuisance. Luckily there are many stop snoring remedies out there that can offer you some relief.
Perhaps the most popular of the stop snoring remedies is the nasal spray. Nasal sprays are particularly effective for treating less severe snoring problems. Nasal sprays do not offer a permanent solution to snoring like surgery does. They have side effect that should be read before using. Nonetheless, many snorers choose nasal sprays as their preferred snoring treatment.
Sprays are used on the throat or nose and they help by lubricating the throat and mouth. They also tighten the skin and muscles around which is supposed to make snore-producing vibrations less likely. These sprays don’t offer a permanent solution though. Once you stop using them then you will begin to snore again. They do provide good temporary snoring relief for many people.
Nasal sprays are ideal for those that aren’t chronic snorers but instead only snore in certain situations. For instance, many of us snore only when we have a sinus infection or the common cold. Others snore when their allergies act up. Some people might discover that they snore only if the drink too much alcohol before going to sleep. Nasal spray is a great stop snoring remedy for those these temporary causes of snoring.
Most snoring remedies deal with the vibrations caused while snoring. Other remedies approach the problem from different perspective and try to prevent snoring from occurring in the first place. This is often accomplished through the use of chin cushions or chin straps. Are you wondering how these could possibly be stop snoring remedies?
These devices work because most snorers snore while breathing through their mouth. Breathing through the mouth is the cause of most snoring. Often by changing breathing patterns from the mouth to the nose, snoring can be completely prevented.
While breathing through the mouth, a person’s jaw will often fall open. This is especially true when sleeping on the back. When the jaw is open then the tongue sometimes falls into the back of the mouth and makes breathing more difficult.
Chinstraps are effective because they hold the jaw in place and keep it from falling open. Chin cushions keep the entire head from falling forward. This ensures that that the jaw stays closed and that airways are fully open. Stop snoring remedies that get similar results come in the form of tape. One way is to simply tape the mouth shut before bed. This can be a little more uncomfortable but it keeps the jaw from opening.
Taping the mouth closed can be uncomfortable. An alternative to this would be to use chin up strips. These are strips that are taped to the bottom of the mouth. They are supposed to encourage a person to breath through the noise. But unlike taping the mouth shut, it is still possible to breath through the mouth, cough, talk, etc. This makes them a more viable option for most people.
If none of these stop snoring remedies work for you then you might want to consider getting surgery. It is possible to achieve permanent results with this. However, this can be costly and might not be the best choice for most people.
